Discus (Symphysodon spp.) are cichlids that originated from the Amazon River basin in South America. The first discus fish was discovered between 1832 and 1833 and was recognized as Symphysodon discus Heckel, 1840.

The ideal aquarium temperature for rearing discus is between 28°C and 31°C. During culture, higher or lower temperatures potentially affect social behaviors and metabolism, lead to oxidative stress in discus and other Amazonian cichlid..

Discus Fish Characteristics

Discus have a wide range of body colors. Their colors can be divided into 2 categories which is Primary/Base colors and Secondary/Surface colors. Primary colors are those that the discus is born with, while secondary colors are those develop as the fish grows.
